A bunch of people incapable of reading a dateline have been amazed this week by the 4 year old news that some kids in Baltimore are using “yo” as a pronoun. So I googled it to see if there was actually anything new on this (Google News was very helpful) and was reminded of this amazing “open source religion” called Yoism (“Yo, The Infinite, Unknowable, Divine Mystery of Existence”, and here is a hairy-nosed wombat summing up Yoism in 30 seconds), that seems to claim partial credit for the spread of “yo” to Baltimore:
A few years after a founding member of Yoism moved to Baltimore to become a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University and held a number of Yo gatherings there, we became aware of a new linguistic phenomenon taking form. Apparently, it may be catching on.
I’ve never really been sure whether this is a spoof or not, it gets harder and harder to tell the longer you’re on the internet, but here’s Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese discussing “yo”.
